Google Ads / SEA

For businesses that want to know which ad spend actually leads to enquiries, appointments or sales.

Sponsored

Google Ads are one of the fastest ways to reach prospects who are ready to convert. Whether search ads, shopping ads, local campaigns for Google Maps or call-only ads, hardly any other channel can be controlled so precisely and measured so accurately. BUT: on hardly any other platform is it so easy for inexperienced advertisers to waste three- to four-figure budgets.

I've been running Google Ads for all kinds of businesses for more than 5 years, and as an experienced Google Ads freelancer I help you implement your campaigns successfully.

Who it's for

Suitable for businesses that want to generate measurable enquiries, sales or interactions and want to know what their ad spend has actually achieved.

What you get

Search campaigns, shopping ads and other formats when they fit the strategy. Including clean conversion tracking, so it becomes visible which campaigns actually deliver results.

How I work

Transparent billing based on time spent, instead of contractual lock-in, a « subscription obligation » or charging a percentage of your ad spend. With clearly defined goals and a test period.

Google Ads (or AdWords, the old name is still stubbornly hanging on) can be used from the one-person business to the larger company, B2B as well as B2C, completely industry-independent. If you can tell me what a customer should do on your website - submit a form, book an appointment, buy something - and there are people actively searching for what you offer, we can work with that.

When do Google Ads make sense?

There are a few conditions, which we look at together in the first consultation, that you should be aware of. They determine how successful Google Ads can actually be:

You don't need to worry about anything else at this stage. With me as your SEA freelancer, you get everything from a single source, from campaign setup to conversion tracking. And, as the person who looks after your campaign from setup to evaluation, I can usually give you an individual assessment as early as the first consultation.

How it works

Step 01

Non-binding first consultation

Together we discuss your goals and starting point. I'll advise you whether and how a Google Ads campaign could be implemented for you.

Step 02

Campaign setup

I build your campaign and, if needed, set up your conversion tracking. You receive all deliverables for approval.

Step 03

Test period

No one can guarantee how well Google Ads will work for a specific business. Google Ads also need a few weeks to « settle in » anyway. That's why I like to start with a 3-month test period.

Step 04

Review & extension

After the test period we discuss your campaign's results. If you're happy with your Google Ads, you decide how you want to proceed.

Real-world examples

For confidentiality reasons, I don't publish client names in connection with project details or detailed case studies. These figures do, however, come from real client projects and serve as a guide. You can also find a selection of the clients I've had the pleasure of working with in my references.

The business offers B2C solutions with longer decision cycles and personal consultation as a central part of the sales process. Because of the limited catchment area and the high order values, the focus wasn't on generating as many enquiries as possible, but on generating qualified consultation appointments.

Implementation

  • Search campaign focused on purchase-ready search queries
  • Geographic restriction to the relevant catchment area
  • Direct appointment booking via an online booking system
  • Average ad budget: CHF 20 per day

Result (12 months)

  • 121 booked first consultations
  • Approx. CHF 60 ad cost per appointment booking

The company sells custom solutions in the B2B sector with a high volume per order. The goal was to generate qualified quote requests via Google Ads.

Implementation

  • Search campaigns on transaction-oriented keywords
  • Focus on search queries with concrete procurement intent
  • Average ad budget: CHF 30 per day

Result (12 months)

  • 173 quote requests
  • Approx. CHF 65 ad cost per request

By the way: if you prefer a more budget-friendly variant of SEA, I have good news at least for the B2B space. Similar to Google Ads, Microsoft Advertising also lets you run ads on Bing.

The market share is smaller, but at least on business devices, where the default search engine is usually preset, it's worthwhile. In my experience, click prices on Bing Ads run 10-20% below Google.

Frequently asked questions

Generally yes, but it depends on the individual campaign. I can often continue professionally built campaigns seamlessly. Occasionally, however, existing campaigns are set up poorly. In those cases it's usually more efficient and cheaper to end a campaign and rebuild it from scratch.

Many agencies charge a percentage of the ad spend or offer a subscription model for ad management. With me as a Google Ads freelancer, you only pay for the time I actually spend optimising your campaign. The effort depends on the campaign, but generally you can expect 15-60 minutes of management per week, with a cost cap that depends on the size of your campaign.

That's up to you: after 3 months the campaign ends, and I only extend it once you've actively given me your go-ahead to continue. Your ad account stays in your possession, so you can also continue the campaign yourself afterwards or hand it over to another marketer if you like.

Google allows almost any budget, but that doesn't mean every budget makes sense. Campaigns learn from user data and become more accurate and cheaper as a result. Minimal budgets usually mean the ad algorithm gets too little data to learn from, so the campaign is cheap in total but the cost per conversion is significantly higher. My Ads cost calculator gives you a sense of which budget makes sense.

The first few weeks of a new campaign are a « learning phase » during which Google tries to understand which parts of your audience respond to what. This experimentation can be sped up marginally by increasing the budget, but generally a campaign only really hits its stride after 10-12 weeks.

Conversion tracking is usually necessary to measure how successful a campaign really is. GA4 can be used as a conversion source, but in most cases a setup with Google Tag Manager is more reliable and cleaner. But you don't need to worry about that: setting up conversion tracking is - if necessary - already included in the campaign setup with me.
